Has the pandemic done a number on your zeal for your job? For many, the COVID 19 plague has taken away many of the things we previously loved about our work. This is especially true for apartment onsite professionals.
Over the past 18 months, work has become remarkably different. Some property management professionals have seen their relationship with their “once loved” job deteriorate. What can we do to put the spark back in our work? Try these ideas:
- Realize What You are Feeling is Normal –
The pandemic has forced many of us to work from home or in some other isolated environment. This can be a grind for some and make work less fun and stimulating. Give yourself permission to feel this way but remember there is light at the end of the tunnel. Most of us believe we will be together at work again.
- Do a Little Navel Gazing –
It has been a tough year! Maybe a tough year or more for your family, too. COVID, masks, isolation, vaccinations, and even some crazy stuff going on with our country’s direction. Do some self-reflection. The feelings you have for work may be part of an overall mindset of stress and anxiety that you are projecting to other aspects of life. What is really bothering you?
- Practice Gratitude –
Focus on the aspects of your job that you like. Write down the positive parts of your work and keep that list in view. The more positivity you look for, the more you will find. This knowledge can renew your enthusiasm for your job and energize your productivity.
- Find a Mentor –
Seek to connect with someone at your property (or in the corporate office) who performs well and is respected by all…and be willing to invest time in helping you grow professionally. Knowing you have an ally in the office may soften some of the frustrations you have and be a good sounding board. The right mentor will motivate you to grow in your expertise and take on more work challenges.
- Get a Life Outside of Work –
Are you really burned out, or do you just need some variety in your life? Property management can consume you. If you are in the office late most evenings and dreaming of work at night, you need to get a life. Connect with your family and friends. Join a charity organization. Get active in your church. Develop a hobby. Do anything except watching more Netflix! You will have something to look forward to after work, and it will keep you sharp and productive when you are in the office.
If after these options you are still miserable or bored to tears, remember that the world is not ending. You won’t always work at THIS job. That knowledge alone will make your day better and your current job more tolerable. And if you must quit, make sure you exit your company in a fashion that your team will truly miss you and your performance.
